MERGER

We have interesting cross cultural problems when KLM and Air France get together or Fortis and ABN AMRO merged. And this was only a neighbouring country. What may bring us the acquisition of an Asean country like China or Japan? It doesn’t have to be a disaster. There are acquisitions which are problematic, not so much because of the cross cultural differences, but because of the differences of the corporate culture. These are mostly more dangerous for the succes of the operation than the cultral differences originating from the different countries.

These may be more silent and cause personal discomfort and inefficient workflow. These are often taken for granted.

Cross cultural differences come up when problems arise. So do you go on muddling about? Or do you say ah, well, we bought the company, so they have to adept and adjust to our culture. This happens many times.

But when an Asian country takes over a Dutch company. Will they get the full profit of this workforce by doing this. The individualistic people at the Rhinedelta. If they would they could make a profit of more then 10%. How? Why?

They would when they feel recognized and respected in their own culture. Especially the Dutch would increase their productivity with a much higher percentage.
